While a number of royal traditions have gotten shuffled since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there's at least one custom that the Queen won't be changing up this year. On Sunday, Her Majesty headed by helicopter to Sandringham, her Norfolk estate, ahead of the 70th anniversary of her father's death and her accession to the throne.

The Queen typically spends the holidays at Sandringham, generally remaining at the estate through early February where she pays homage to her late father, King George VI, who passed away in February 6, 1952, making the then-princess Elizabeth monarch.

However, this past holiday season, Elizabeth instead remained at Windsor Castle, as she had the previous year, amidst a resurgence in COVID-19 infection rates. Prior to 2020, the Queen had held Christmas at Sandringham every year since 1988, walking with other members of the royal family for Christmas Day church services.

In 2021, the omicron variant, combined with advice from her doctors to rest through most of the fall, created some doubt as to whether she would eschew her usual visit to Sandringham altogether. Now though, it seems she will be spending some time at the estate, though it's not yet clear how long she intends to remain.

Sandringham has particular significance for the Queen at this time of year, as it's not only the place where her father was born, but also where he passed away. With 2022 marking 70 years since that occasion began her reign—the longest of any monarch in English history—the tradition of being at Sandringham would seem to hold special importance.
