Queen Elizabeth's Former Lady-in-Waiting Reacts to Not Being Invited to King Charles's Coronation

As we get closer to the coronation of King Charles, more details are emerging about the big day. Namely: Who is attending?

While we can expect to see the entirety of the British family, there will not be as many aristocrats in attendance, including Lady Pamela Hicks—the former lady-in-waiting to the late Queen Elizabeth. Her daughter, India Hicks, took to Instagram to share her mother's reaction to not getting an invite.

"One of the King’s personal secretaires [sic] was passing on a message from the King. They explained that this coronation was to be very different to the Queen’s. 8,000 guests would be whittled down to 1,000 alleviating the burden on the state," India wrote. "The King was sending his great love and apologies, he was offending many family and friends with the reduced list. My mother was not offended at all."

India, a goddaughter of King Charles, writes that invitations to the coronation were being sent based on meritocracy, not aristocracy, and her mother was pleased to see this change. "How very, very sensible," Lady Pamela told her daughter. "I am going to follow with great interest the events of this new reign."

Lady Pamela, now 94 years old, will witness the third coronation of her lifetime. She was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, attended the coronation, and served as one of Queen Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting. India Hicks was a bridesmaid at King Charles and Princess Diana's wedding. "Charles was, and still is, a remarkable godfather—caring, considerate, and involved. I adored him then and still do now," she wrote in T&C in 2018.
