The news of Queen Elizabeth II's passing is inspiring different emotions amongst many Canadians.

The website for the British Monarchy posted a photo of the Queen, along with the years of her birth and death, with the following statement: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."

It also noted that the official website of the Royal Family is temporarily unavailable while appropriate changes are made.

In his first statement under his new time, her son, King Charles III, said that the death of his "beloved" Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, was a "moment of the greatest sadness" for his family and the world.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother," he said. "I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world."

During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.King Charles III

Many took to social media to express their feelings about life in Canada without the Queen. Since Queen Elizabeth has reigned longer than Queen Victoria, some expressed how challenging it would be to imagine someone else taking over that position.

Others expressed that the passing of the Queen should be an opportunity for Canada to consider severing its ties with the monarchy, and some wondered what will happen to the face of our currency.

A survey conducted last year found that most Canadians won’t be as interested in the monarchy if the Queen’s successor, Prince Charles, takes over. Queen Elizabeth had reigned over Canada since 1952.
