Queen Elizabeth II does not often release statements about her personal emotional state, but for her 95th birthday today, the Queen gave the world an update on how she's doing in the days following the death of her husband, Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh passed away at age 99 on April 9, 2021. His funeral was this past Saturday. The ceremony reunited Prince Harry with his grandmother, father Prince Charles, and brother Prince William for the first time in over a year.

The Queen signed off her statement formally, using her Elizabeth R (Elizabeth Regina, or Queen in Latin) signature. She expressed gratitude for the world's tributes to Philip, saying it has heartened her and her family during this tough time. The royal family remains in an official period of mourning following the funeral.

The Queen wrote:

I have, on the occasion of my 95th birthday today, received many messages of good wishes, which I very much appreciate.

While as a family we are in a period of great sadness, it has been a comfort to us all to see and to hear the tributes paid to my husband, from those within the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and around the world.

My family and I would like to thank you for all the support and kindness shown to us in recent days. We have been deeply touched, and continue to be reminded that Philip had such an extraordinary impact on countless people throughout his life.

Elizabeth R.
