Happy Wednesday from Sydney Franklin and Patti Gallagher Newberry.

We collaborated on today's piece about Queensgate, the neighborhood Cincinnati created in 1961 (the year one of us was born!) after it razed part of lower West End to build Interstate 75.

The West Side industrial enclave has had somewhat of an identity crisis over the years, with many of the city's original ambitions for it going unrealized. But its revitalization is back in play, thanks to plans for the gigantic Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project.

Part of what we learned: The city had studied the health of the neighborhood often through the years, but not in the last decade-plus. Now, with federal funds putting the bridge project on the fast track, the Port of Cincinnati wants to add room for more advanced manufacturing companies to move into Queensgate.

If more jobs follow, will there also be room for housing? More broadly, is Queensgate poised for change (for real this time) after decades of attempts to reimagine it?

Here’s one fun fact we didn’t include: The Enquirer’s old printing plant is the now home of Wegman Co., a Queensgate commercial furniture distributor. They’ve preserved a bit of newspaper lore there, including this memento posted on the stalls in the ladies’ restrooms.
