Conversion therapy is its own very real horror. But the new Peacock slasher flick They/Them takes it to a new level of terrifying when a killer begins to take people out at the insidious anti-LGBTQ+ camp Whistler. The anti-queer counselors are played by Kevin Bacon and Carrie Preston (Claws, The Good Wife, True Blood) as a husband and wife team of converters, and Anna Chlumsky (Veep, Inventing Anna) as the camp’s new medic.

The film, from out writer-director-executive producer John Logan, is unique in that the actors playing the queer campers all align with their character’s sexual and gender identities.

The official synopsis reads:

“Kevin Bacon plays Owen Whistler in this slasher horror film set at an LGBTQIA+ conversion camp. Several queer and trans campers join Whistler for a week of programming intended to ‘help them find a new sense of freedom.’ As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. When a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous.”

The queer campers, according to a press release, include The Politician and Work in Progress star Theo Germaine as Jordan, a transgender and nonbinary camper from a religious background; Quei Tann as Alexandra, a trans woman whose parents have forced her into conversion therapy; Booksmart’s Austin Crute as Toby a gay camper who made a deal with his parents to attend conversion therapy in exchange for a trip to New York City; Monique Kim as Veronica, who is bisexual; Anna Lore as Kim, a closeted lesbian; Cooper Koch as Stu, a gay jock who’s not ready to be out; and Darwin Del Fabro as Gabriel, a gay teen who’s been bullied.

They/Them is produced by the horror giant Blumhouse and premieres on Peacock August 5. Watch the terrors of conversion therapy below.
