Quicklee’s gas station and convenience store coming to Brighton

A weathered-looking Mobil station at Brighton’s Twelve Corners is going to be replaced by something shiny, new and greener: a Quicklee’s gas station and convenience store.

Last month, Brighton officials gave the owners of the Avon, Livingston County-based chain needed approvals to demolish two side-by-side properties it owns — Twelve Corners Mobil Service Center, which sits on a triangle of asphalt at 1950 Monroe Ave., and a small house at 1966 Monroe that recently was home to a hair salon — and combine the parcels to accommodate a Quicklee’s.

The store will measure 2,667 square feet and have a covered patio in front, according to plans submitted to the town. Behind the store will be eight parking spaces and a set of gas pumps covered by a 2,160-square-foot canopy. (The existing Mobil station has two street-facing gas-pump canopies.)

That setup is a novel one for Quicklee's, Brighton Supervisor Bill Moehle said. "It's the first time they have done that with any of of their stations," he said. "We're trying to make Brighton more pedestrian-friendly, so instead of putting the gas pumps out in front, they agreed to put the store in front. So, the store will be closer to the street and the gas pumps will be less conspicuous."

A pedestrian plaza with landscaping will fill the area in front of the covered patio, near where Monroe and Elmwood avenues come to a point.

And the development will have other greenery, including a shade tree near one of its edges, as well as a bicycle rack and EV charging stations.

The owners of the Quicklee's chain have gotten permission to tear down a Mobil station and house at Brighton's Twelve Corners to put up a Quicklee's gas station and convenience store.

Customers will enter and exit using new driveways off of Monroe and Elmwood.

Proposed hours of operation are 6 a.m. to midnight daily.

No construction date or timeline has been revealed, and it's unknown how long the Mobil station will be out of service once the work starts. The 1950 Monroe address has been occupied by a gas station since 1938, according to the town.

'It's a departure from their style'

Most newer Quicklee's exteriors feature a pale color palette and sand-colored stacked-stone accents. But in keeping with another town request, the Twelve Corners Quicklee's will be faced in brick veneer to reflect the neighborhood aesthetic.

"They designed that Quicklee’s specifically for the Twelve Corners area," said Rick DiStefano, senior planner for Brighton. "It kind of matches what you see in the Twelve Corners area, with the Twelve Corners Plaza across the street and the school. There’s a lot of brick in that area, so it’s got the same type of palette. It's a departure from their style."

The Twelve Corners Quicklee's isn't the only one in the pipeline for Brighton. The company also has been given a green light for a location at 3108 East Ave., a circa-1929 Tudor-style building that once housed a gas station. Work has not begun there yet either, and it too will be specialized because the building has landmark status.

Quicklee’s started with one store in Avon in 1995 and now has 30 throughout the Finger Lakes and western New York regions. Last year, it opened two in Irondequoit, one on the old Wambach’s Garden Center property and the other at Hudson and Titus avenues, where a Mobil station and auto repair shop had operated for decades.
