'Quickly Intensifying': Satellite Images Show Hurricane Ida Over Gulf of Mexico

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of Hurricane Ida’s potential impacts to parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama on Saturday, August 28, ahead of the cyclone’s expected landfall on Sunday.

Imagery captured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s GOES-East satellite shows the center of Hurricane Ida, which was “quickly intensifying” in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday afternoon, the NOAA said.

There was a potential for a “life-threatening” storm surge, “catastrophic” wind damage, and flooding rainfall to hit the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday, according to the NHC. Credit: NOAA via Storyful
