After a few days of living in a snow globe, the South Bend area is moving into a relatively quiet week of weather. Expect little precipitation and temperatures that will stay below freezing through next weekend.

As for sun and blue skies — remember those? — the area’s best chance could be late Tuesday or even Wednesday, said meteorologist Lonnie Fisher with the National Weather Service North Webster, Ind. But that, he emphasized, is a big “if.”

So, it may again be cloudy if any local woodchucks pop their heads out their holes on Thursday for Groundhog Day.

The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center shows that the next three to four weeks are “leaning toward better chances” of temperatures above freezing, Fisher said. We may be at the western edge of those relatively warmer temperatures. The prognostication also suggests more precipitation, which could be snow or rain depending on the temperatures.

But, at least for this week, winter sports fans will be relieved that, Fisher said, “Whatever snow is around, it won’t budge.”

As well, the temperatures will be cold enough for snow making at area ski resorts.

Sunday’s and Monday’s high temperatures will be in the 20s, but Tuesday will be the coldest day of the week, reaching the upper teens. Monday night and Tuesday night could hit single digits.

Since there won’t be a lot of wind, Fisher said wind chills will be about 0, enough to feel it but not the most dangerous.

He said there may be some “pesky lake effect” snow showers Sunday and going into Monday, but it won’t accumulate much.
