Quincy College to offer four-year bachelor's degree in computer science

QUINCY – Quincy College will offer a four-year bachelor's degree program in computer science starting in January.

It will be the school's second bachelor's degree program. The community college, which is owned by Quincy, offered only two-year degrees until last fall when the state approved a bachelor's in business management program.

Quincy College campus debate raises the question: Should the city be running a college?

"This is an example of building on success," Servet Yatin, Quincy College provost, said in a statement. "We owed it to our students and our community to expand our baccalaureate offerings into the high-demand computer science field."

The state's department of higher education approved the new program based on quality, enrollment potential, student interest and local workforce need, the school said. There are thousands of open computer science positions in the state with salaries ranging from $90,000 to $122,000.

The school's computer science faculty developed new courses and changed existing classes to meet requirements for a bachelor's degree.

The new program will be open to all Massachusetts residents, and Quincy will work with community college students in the state to transfer. The school already has agreements with Roxbury and Bristol community colleges.

Current computer science and technology classes are listed online as costing $302 per credit. No specific tuition information was available for the new program.
