Quincy wrestling takes 3rd at Grover Wrestling Invite; Orioles boast 9 medalists, including 2 champions

CONCORD, MI. — The continually improving Quincy Oriole wrestling program took to the road for their first tournament test of the new season on Saturday, traveling to Concord to compete in the Grover Wrestling Invitational. Quincy finished in third place overall on the day with a score of 130 points. Union City took home top honors with 191 points, followed by Reading in second place with 168 points and Quincy in third place. Jonesville finished in fourth place with 106 points, followed by Centreville, Olivet, Ovid Elsie, Hanover Horton, Sand Creek, Athens, Concord, Colon and Tekonsha.

The Quincy third place effort was paced by nine total medalists, a number that included two weight class champions, two runner-up finishes, two third place finishers and three fourth place finishes.

Senior big man Davin George led the Quincy effort with a championship win at 190 pounds after finishing 3-0 on the day. George kicked off his day with a pin fall win in the quarterfinals over Centreville’s Colton Stark in :38 seconds, followed by a pin fall win over Joseph Campbell of Reading in the semifinals in a time of 1:53, setting up the championship match with Isaac Shively of Jonesville. The two bulls battled for three full periods and at the end it was George taking the hard fought 9-2 decision and the gold medal.

Also bringing home a gold medal for the Quincy grapplers was Gavin Peet at 175 pounds. Peet finished 3-0 on the day for his championship effort, kicking off with a pin fall win over Tyler Williams of Olivet in 1:39 in the quarterfinals. Peet had the tough task of facing a teammate in the semifinals where he defeated Quincy’s Landon Beardon via pin fall in 1:31, setting up a championship meeting with Lukas Strine of Reading. In a back-and-forth battle it was Peet bringing home the gold with the hard fought razor thin 4-3 decision victory.

Senior Jacob Reif, a returning state finalist at Division 3, brought home runner-up honors in a very tough 132 pound weight class on Saturday after falling to Union City’s Landyn Crance in the championship. Reif kicked off the day with a pin fall win over Thomas Shanks of Sand Creek in 1:08, followed by a semifinal win over Tyler Milks of Jonesville via a 12-4 Major Decision, setting up a championship bout with defending D4 125 pound state champion in Crance. It was a hotly contest matchup the came down to the very final moments as Crance secured a late score to take the 5-4 decision, giving Reif the runner-up finish.

Hamilton Spieth also secured himself a runner-up finish on Saturday, taking the silver medal in the 215 pound weight class after falling to Union City’s Grady Iobe in the championship. Spieth kicked off the day with a 14-6 Major Decision over Gaven Teller of Hanover Horton in the quarterfinals, followed by a 9-1 Major Decision over Evan McColley of Jonesville, setting up a championship match with Iobe, the third place finisher in the state at D4 215 pounds last season. Iobe got an early take down and quickly turned Spieth for the pin in :19, giving Spieth a very respectable runner-up finish.

Additional medal winners for Quincy include Chase Jenson with a third place finish at 113 pounds after finishing 3-1 on the day; Caleb Rose with a third place finish at 120 pounds after finishing 3-1 on the day; Landon Bearden with a fourth place finish at 175 pounds after finishing 2-2 on the day; Ethan Hollister with a fourth place finish at 190 pounds after battling his way back through the consolation bracket, going 3-2 on the day in his first every varsity wrestling tournament after being bumped up a weight.; and Lucas Dixon with a fourth place finish at 285 pounds after finishing 3-2 on the day.

Also wrestling hard for Quincy but coming up just short of a medal were Kaleb Handy who finished 1-2 at 138 pounds and Grayson Laney who finished 0-2 at 144 pounds.

Quincy wrestling will be back in action Wednesday when they host a non-conference double dual, beginning at 6 p.m.

Tekonsha wrestling competes at Concord Grover Wrestling Invite

The Tekonsha Indians wrestling program sent three wresters to Concord on Saturday to compete in the Grover Wrestling Invite.

Competing for Tekonsha on the day was Bryan Smith who finished 1-2 at 144 pounds; Emmitt Blashfield who finished 1-2 at 157 pounds; and Wyatt Medcalf who just missed a medal at 285 pounds, finishing 3-2 on the day after falling in the consolation semifinals.
