Quincy wrestling takes 5th at Dansville; Reif and George secure gold

DANSVILLE, MI. — The Quincy Oriole wrestling team traveled to Dansville on Saturday for weekend invitational action, coming home with fifth place out of 18 teams and seven individual medals from the Dansville Aggies Invitational.

Quincy finished in fifth place with a score of 137 points, just ahead of Big 8 rival Homer who finished in sixth place with 115 points. Hamilton won the title with 268 points, followed by Durand Area Schools with 201 points. Napoleon took third with 157 points, followed by Schoolcraft in fourth with 139 points and then Quincy.

Quincy had two tournament champions on the day, as senior Jacob Reif took first place at 132 pounds while senior Davin George took first place at 190 pounds.

With their victories both Reif and George become the first members of the Quincy wrestling team to reach the 20 win mark, with both now holding a season record of 20-1.

Reif was flawless on the day in his championship run to the 132 pound gold, not surrendering a single point in his three matches, winning one by pin fall and two by Technical Fall. For his efforts Reif was voted as the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler in the light weight divisions.

Reif started his run to the tournament title wth a quarterfinal pin fall win over Logan Bayer of Hillsdale in :41 seconds, followed by a semifinals win over Logan Hartman of Napoleon via a 15-0 Technical Fall. In the finals Reif faced off with Michael Olsen of Hamilton, a match Reif would dominate on the way to a 15-0 Technical Fall win.

At 190 pounds it was George putting the state on notice, winning the gold medal with two pin fall wins and an epic 6-5 Tie Break win over the number one seed in the tournament and the ninth ranked wrestler in the state in Bart Laretz of Napoleon in the finals. George started off his gold medal run with a pin fall win over Joey LaSalle of Olivet in 1:34, followed by a semifinal win over Kegaen Kohlhoff of Birch Run in 3:16, setting up the championship bout with Laretz. The two battled back and forth, needing overtime to decide a winner. George went on to take the 6-5 Decision in Tie Break to claim the gold.

At 285 pounds it was Lucas Dixon earning runner-up honors after battling his way through a very tough weight class. Dixon began the day with a pin fall win over Ben Reiniche of Concord in :13 seconds, followed by a pin fall win over Gavin Yax of Whitemore Lake in 1:55, leading to a match up with the top seeded Aiden Nugent of Napoleon (17-3). Dixon shocked tournament goers by sticking the top seeded Nugent in 3:16, earning a spot in the championship finals to face Seth Nevins of Hamilton. Nevins went on to win the championship, defeating Dixon via pin fall in 1:31, giving Dixon a very impressive second place finish.

Chayse Jensen also brought home a silver medal from the Dansville Invite, taking second place at 106 pounds. Jenson started his day with a pin fall win over Noah Barnes of Olivet in 3:05, followed by a semifinal win over Landon Winder of Homer via a 7-4 decision, setting up a championship match with Ethan Hawkins of Durand Area Schools. Hawkins would win via pin fall in 3:39, however Jensen was impressive throughout the day in his silver medal finish.

Also earning some hardware for Quincy by placing in the top six were Caleb Rose who finished sixth place at 120 pounds; Landon Bearden who finished in fourth place at 165 pounds; and Gavin Peet who finished in fourth place at 175 pounds.

The Quincy coaching staff also wanted to recognize the efforts Landon Bearden who finished in fourth place at 165 pounds.

“Landon (Bearden) has worked hard to become the starter for the team at 165 pounds and he continues to show tremendous growth as a second year wrester,” said the Quincy coaching staff.

Quincy will look to ride the momentum of their weekend effort with a Big 8 double dual meet at home on Wednesday when they welcome both Bronson and Union City to town.
