Quincy's Sawyer captures D3 Regional Golf title; Quincy, Union City and Bronson take to the links in postseason play

SOUTH HAVEN, MI. — The Quincy Orioles, the Bronson Vikings and the Union City Chargers all traveled to the Beeches Golf Club in South Haven on Tuesday to compete in the MHSAA Division Three Regional 15 Golf tournament.

After a long day of postseason golf one local golfer is moving on to the state finals. Quincy junior Sam Sawyer not only qualified for the state finals but took home Individual Regional Championship honors at Tuesday’s event after firing a tremendous 18-hole score of 76, a full eight shots better than the next closest competitor.

Sawyer’s regional championship effort helped Quincy finish in seventh place overall as as team with a total score of 392. Union City was not far behind their Big 8 counterparts, taking ninth place in the Regional with a score of 413 while Bronson finished in eighteenth place with a total team score of 491.

Aiding Sawyer in the Quincy seventh place effort was Dave Milliman who finished in thirteenth place with a score of 93; Chase Walters in fifty-fourth place with a score of 108; Riley Iwanicki in seventy-second place with a score of 115; and Isabelle Neely in eighty-fifth place with a score of 132.

Pacing the Union City ninth place finish was senior Brayton Mears who finished in sixteenth place with a score of 94. Not far behind was teammate Landyn Crance who finished in thirty-third place with a score of 99; Logan Mears in sixty-first place with a 110; and Jeremy Zehr also in sixty-first place with a 110.

Bronson’s effort was led by Brayden Ransbottom who finished in a tie for thirty-third place after carding a score of 99. Also adding to the Viking regional effort was Carson Norton in sixty-sixth place with a 112; Desmond Osborne in eighty-second place with a 128; and Mathew Blankenship in ninety-first place with a score of 152.

The Division Three Regional 15 team championship went to Coloma who finished with a score of 364, just one stroke head of Schoolcraft who took runner-up honors at 365. The third and final state qualifying team was Olivet who finished with a score of 370.

Joining Sam Sawyer from Quincy in qualifying for the state finals as an individual not associated with one of the top three teams was Ethan Tripp of Berrien Springs with an 86 and Parker Lanning of Watervliet with an 87.

Sawyer will now join the rest of the Division Three state qualifiers as they travel to The Fortress in Frankenmuth on June 10-11 for the MHSAA Division Three State Finals.
