QUINCY — One golfer from the Branch County area remains alive in the MHSAA postseason as golfers from around the state head to their respective state final locations.

Quincy junior Sam Sawyer is the lone Branch County representative this weekend as he travels to the Fortress in Frankenmuth for the Division Three Golf State Finals.

Sawyer was dominant in his qualification round at regionals, held at the Beeches Golf Club in South Haven, winning the regional championship with a score of 76, a full eight shots better then his next closest competitor, Luke Phillips (84) of the regional championship winning team from Coloma.

Heading to the state finals Sawyer finds himself in a tie for second place in terms of qualifying score as an individual with his 76, sitting tied with Mason Anderson of Belding. The top individual qualifying score came from Ethan Swenson of Bath who fired a round of 71 in his regional qualifying win.

Sawyer will tee off Friday morning at 9 a.m. beginning on the fourth hole where he finds himself in a pairing with Anderson of Belding and Cody Meigs of Houghton Lake.
