R. Kelly 'wanted to fight' Dave Chappelle over infamous sketch, co-creator says

R. Kelly was not happy about the memorable "Chappelle's Show" bit that mocked him back in 2003, according to the comedy show's co-creator, Neal Brennan.

Brennan appeared as a guest on the radio show "The Breakfast Club" Tuesday and said the "I Believe I Can Fly" singer wanted to brawl with the show's star Dave Chappelle.

Chappelle imitated Kelly as part of his Comedy Central series that ran from 2003 until 2006, making light of an alleged sex tape where Kelly supposedly urinated on an underage girl. Chappelle as Kelly crooned lyrics like, "Said your body, your body is a port-o-potty."

"R. Kelly wanted to fight Dave," Brennan said Tuesday. "He literally stepped – his goons stepped to Dave in Chicago – and Dave’s goons intervened, and the goons negotiated."

Kelly's lawyer, Steve Greenberg, told USA TODAY he could not comment on Brennan's claims.

Kelly is currently embroiled in allegations of sexual abuse, resurfaced by an explosive docu-series titled "Surviving R. Kelly."

"I don’t think people understand what comedy is supposed to do – we will observe things, we'll make fun of things," Brennan added during "The Breakfast Club." "Did people want us to round up a posse and go arrest R. Kelly? Like, what were we supposed to do?

"The idea that we somehow normalized this, like we also did a white supremacist sketch," he said. "I don't think we normalized white supremacy.

"Our job is to poke fun at things. And even if it’s bleak, we still poke fun at it," he continued. "We were trying to humiliate a guy who was known for peeing.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Chappelle's rep for comment.
