How the race was won: Nashville's 2023 mayoral runoff election in maps

Nashville elected former Metro Council member Freddie O'Connell to be its 10th mayor in a landslide election on Thursday.

O'Connell secured 72,932 votes (64%), a decisive victory over business leader and former political strategist Alice Rolli's 41,171 votes (36%).

O'Connell picked up precincts; Rolli lost ground

O'Connell won 152 of Davidson County's 178 precincts in the runoff election, having picked up support in every district previously won by other Democratic-leaning candidates who did not garner enough votes in the general election to advance to the runoff.

Rolli claimed 50 precincts in the general election, but lost significant ground on Sept. 14, winning the most votes in just 26 precincts.

O'Connell vs. Rolli strongholds

O'Connell's highest concentration of support remained loosely clustered around Nashville's center, though he did gain more votes in the North Nashville area.

Rolli's highest concentration of support closely mirrored her general election results, with the most votes coming from Southwest Nashville and precincts around the county's edge.

Voter turnout

A total of 114,226 Nashvillians voted in the runoff election on Sept. 14, up from 101,837 voters in Aug. 3's general election. Turnout patterns across precincts remained nearly identical to the general election.

By comparison, 90,835 people voted in the 2019 runoff election between John Cooper and David Briley, and 110,894 people voted in the 2015 runoff election between Megan Barry and David Fox.
