New races highlight fifth edition of Palace City Kiwanis Half Marathon

Sep. 29—MITCHELL — The fifth edition of the Palace City Kiwanis Half Marathon will begin on Sunday, Oct. 2, with some new wrinkles in the race lineup and the route through the heart of the city.

A pair of shorter races have been added to this year's slate of races is a 10K race, which measures at 6.2 miles, and the 3.1-mile 5K. Those races will join the 13.1-mile half marathon. Organizers also continue to offer the half marathon relay, where two individuals tackle the 13.1 miles as pairs.

All races will start and finish at the Corn Palace. The half marathon and half marathon relay races will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by the start of the 5K and 10K races at 8 a.m.

Due to the construction on Main Street north of the Corn Palace, the race route has changed. Runners will now leave the start/finish line area via Seventh Avenue, rather than traveling straight north on Main Street. The route will be followed to Minnesota Avenue, where runners will pass the Mitchell Middle School and Cadwell Sports Complex before moving out to the Lake Mitchell area. Half marathon runners will go out and around Lake Mitchell before returning to the heart of the city, and will also go around the Cadwell complex along the State Highway 37 bypass before returning back to the Corn Palace at the finish line.

The funds raised will help go to Kiwanis Club supported causes in the community, including the upgraded playground planned at Kiwanis Woodlot Park. Plans call for the new playground to be fully accessible to individuals of all ages and mobility levels.
