Racetrax Lottery game delivers big win to retired postal worker from Hagerstown

A Washington County Racetrax fan claimed the biggest prize of his life recently, according to the Maryland Lottery.

The retired U.S. Postal Service employee and U.S. Army veteran has visited Lottery headquarters several times with winning tickets over the years, but those past wins pale in comparison to the better than $100,000 he just won, according to a news release from the Lottery.

“I’ve always enjoyed horseracing, so Racetrax was perfect for me,” the Hagerstown resident told Lottery officials in the release. Agency rules allow winners to claim their prizes anonymously.

His new $101,523 prize is the fifth significant prize he’s won playing the game.

The Western Maryland man said the horses he’d been betting on for weeks had turned cold on him, according to the release.

“Just to switch things up, I bought a quick-pick ticket," he told Lottery officials, according to the release. "It didn’t win for me, but I stuck with the horse number combination on it, and here I am.”

That lucky Superfecta combination was 12, 11, 8 and 2.

The winner realized that he’d won big not long after he purchased his lucky 20-draw Racetrax ticket from the Sheetz at 10515 Sharpsburg Pike in Hagerstown.

“When I saw the results on my Lottery app, I knew that I’d won, but not how much,” he said in the news release.

A visit to another Lottery retailer ended any confusion, according to the release.

“I didn’t celebrate when I found out. I pretended that nothing was going on,” he said.

Still calm a day later, Lottery officials asked when his celebration would begin.

“In the car when I leave here,” he said, according to the release, “and then, an even louder one when we get home.”

Management at Sheetz will receive a $1,015 bonus for selling the big winning ticket.

The Washington County Racetrax “expert” said he would bank his prize.

“It’ll be there for us when we need it, or when we can help family who do,” he said.
