Rachael Kirkconnell has released a video message on Instagram, asking people to stop defending her racist behavior—including attending an antebellum-themed plantation party in 2018. The video comes two weeks after Rachael’s written apology.

In her statement, via People, Rachael said that she’s gotten a “lot of messages” from followers, including from those who incorrectly think she’s done nothing wrong. “I think that the first big step in all of this is white people stepping up and taking accountability,” she said. “Things will never change if we don’t all work together in working toward this racial progress and this unity that we want.”

She added that she has come to realize “sitting aside and hiding in the corner and, you know, avoid being called performative—that doesn’t help anyone or anything” and also explained, “I want and need to use my privilege and my platform, that I so do not deserve, just to shine a light on these issues and try and do what I can to you know take a step in the right direction.”

Rachael ended her video asking that those still defending her stop. “If you are in my comments or defending me anywhere telling people that I did nothing wrong, that there’s nothing to be hurt about, there’s nothing to be angry about or offended about, please stop,” she said. “That’s not our place to tell people what they can and can’t be offended about. That’s wrong and that's part of the problem.”

It remains to be seen if Rachael will be addressing this during The Bachelor’s upcoming live “After the Final Rose.”
