Racine officers shot and killed a person early Monday morning, police say

A person was killed by Racine police after exchanging gunfire with officers in the early morning hours Monday, the department said.

Assistant Chief Alex Ramirez said at a news conference Monday that the person was part of a domestic violence incident where shots were fired, prior to the fatal police shooting.

The Racine Police Department only confirmed the deceased individual was male, but didn't provide an age.

Officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to an address in their jurisdiction for the shots fired incident around 10:10 p.m. Sunday, but when officers arrived he had left the scene, Ramirez said.

The Racine Police Department later initiated a traffic stop on him in the 200 block of Howland Avenue, Ramirez said, but the driver exited his vehicle and into a wooded area.

Around 12:30 a.m. Monday officers gave the person several commands to come out of the woods but were unsuccessful, Ramirez said. As officers approached, he shot at officers and then gunfire was exchanged striking him fatally, Ramirez said. No officers were struck.

According to Ramirez, the incident was captured on body-worn, squad and drone cameras, and all the footage has been given to the Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigations, which typically leads investigations of fatal police shootings.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
