Racist speech & anti-Semitic symbols displayed during incident at UW-Whitewater, police investigating

WHITEWATER, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Police Department are currently investigating an incident that took place outside a residence hall on Sunday night in which a group of people were chanting racist words and displaying anti-Semitic symbols.

According to a statement from UW-Whitewater’s Chancellor Corey King, the incident happened shortly before 5:45 p.m. outside of Knilans Residence Hall, where four people were chanting racist words, lighting what appeared to be road flares, and displaying anti-Semitic symbols.

Campus police arrived quickly, but the group of four had left the area. Authorities say there is no threat to safety on campus.

Chancellor King says that the actions of the individuals are consistent with a group that has been visiting other campuses and has no affiliation with UW-Whitewater whatsoever. In an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence on campus.

“The actions of the group last night are abhorrent and go against our core values,” stated Chancellor King. “At UW-Whitewater, we strive to create a safe community where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We take pride in our Warhawk family. We reject hate in all its forms.”
