Radford officer charged for assault, DWI after alleged fight at Wytheville restaurant

WYTHEVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — A Radford police officer is facing charges after allegedly getting into a fight at a restaurant and driving while intoxicated in Wytheville on Jan. 27.

Wytheville police told WFXR that just before 1 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Log House Restaurant for a fight. When officers arrived at the scene, they noticed a silver pickup truck leaving the area.

Police said dispatch then advised them that the truck leaving the area belonged to the suspect, later identified as Radford Officer John Fuhrman.

Wytheville police said a second responding officer noticed the truck at the intersection of N. 11th Street and E. Monroe and conducted a traffic stop. During the stop, they learned that Officer Fhurman was driving the pickup truck, and Michael Fuhrman, was in the passenger seat.

As the investigation continued officers took written statements from the victim and witnesses at the restaurant. Wytheville police told WFXR that the victim had injuries to his face and claimed that he was allegedly assaulted by two men.

Police said after the traffic stop and investigation, the pair was arrested.

John Fuhrman, of Wytheville, was charged with:

  • Misdemeanor Assault and Battery.

  • Misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated 1st Offense

He was being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail but was released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.

Michael Fuhrman, of Bunnlevel, North Carolina was charged with Misdemeanor Assault and Battery. He was released on a $1,500 Recognizance Bond.

In response to the incident, the Radford City Police have released the following statement.

The Radford City Police Department was notified that Off Duty Officer John Fuhrman was arrested on Saturday, January 27, 2024, for Driving Under the Influence and Assault and Battery.  Immediate actions were taken by the Radford City Police Department.  Officer Fuhrman was placed on suspension pending an Internal investigation.
