Radio City's Christmas Spectacular cancels rest of its shows due to COVID

·2 min read

As COVID-19 surges throughout the region yet again, closures and cancellations abound. The latest event to shutter this holiday season is The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes, which announced Friday night that the remainder of the 2021 season was canceled.

“We regret that we are unable to continue the Christmas Spectacular this season due to increasing challenges from the pandemic,” the company said in a statement. “We had hoped we could make it through the season and are honored to have hosted hundreds of thousands of fans at more than 100 shows over the last seven weeks.”

The announcement comes as New York set a record number of cases of the virus. New York state reported Friday that just over 21,000 people had tested positive for COVID-19 the previous day, the highest single-day total for new cases since testing became widely available. Just under half of the positive results were in the city.

While one-day snapshots of case totals are traditionally unreliable, a wave of new infections has persisted in the region this week as the omnicron variant continues to spread.

Other performances, such as Broadway shows, including “Hamilton,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” called off performances in recent days because of virus cases in their all-vaccinated casts and crews. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater also canceled its performances Thursday through Sunday.

Shutdowns aren’t limited to the theater though. Three NFL games have been rescheduled this week and outbreaks are causing changes in the NHL schedule as well.

The Christmas Spectacular had previously been canceled due to breakthrough infections among the performers. Ticket holders for the impacted shows can expect a full refund at their point of purchase and the company said that they “look forward to welcoming fans back to Radio City Music Hall in 2022.”
