History will be made on Sunday in the final of the first grand slam of the season at the Australian Open.

Rafael Nadal is aiming to claim a record 21st grand slam title, putting him clear of his great rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

"I went through a lot of challenging moments, a lot of days of hard work without seeing a light there," Nadal told reporters.

"A lot of conversations with the team, with the family about what's gonna happen if things continue like this, thinking that maybe it's a chance to say goodbye. I feel alive in terms of my tennis life, in terms of my tennis career."

His opponent Daniil Medvedev is aiming to be the first man in Open Era history to win his second slam immediately after his first. Victory for the Russian will also see him become world No 1 for the first time, overtaking Novak Djokovic.

"I'm going to play again against one of the greatest," Medvedev said. "What's funny is I'm going to play again against someone going for a 21st title. I think Novak will be watching this one in two days also. Grand slam finals are special. I'm ready."
