STORY: Gotrel fell through the fairing while the boat was traveling at 31 mp/h (50 km/h). He was tossed around, hitting the water repeatedly as he remained attached to the boat via his safety line. His team mates then stopped the boat and pulled him back on board.

Gotrel was able to continue racing immediately.

"Oh, my God. How are we going to resolve this one?" said GB driver Ben Ainslie, reacting after the incident.

"I was just watching him being shaked around and it was pretty full on. Thankfully, he's okay."

The team went on to finish the race in sixth place in Sydney and managed a record 6-6-2 across the first day.
