If you purchased Ragú pasta sauce in the past week, check your cupboards or refrigerator. The company that makes it, Mizkan America Inc., has recalled three flavors of the sauce because they may contain plastic fragments. The sauces involved in this recall were produced between June 4 and June 8, 2019.

The flavors are Chunky Tomato Garlic & Onion, Old World Style Traditional, and Old World Style Meat. Check the cap of the jars to see whether it's marked with the cap codes and "best if used by" dates involved in the recall. (See below for details.)

The problem was discovered during “our normal course of operations and quality checks,” said a spokesperson for Mizkan America.

A total of 9,130 cases of the sauces were recalled. However, the Mizkan spokesperson said: “The vast majority of these cases were still contained at retailer warehouses and distribution centers. Based on our investigations, we believe a limited amount of products may have reached store shelves last week at the earliest.” Retailers who received the product were notified. The company hasn't received any complaints or reports of injuries.

“If you have any of the recalled sauce in your home, don’t eat it,” says James E. Rogers, Ph.D., director of food safety research and testing at Consumer Reports. “When foreign materials, like plastic, get into food, it can cause injury.”
