🌱 The Railyards Makeover + Parking Fines @ 7th & J
Good morning, people of Sacramento! Jeri Karges here with a fresh Sacramento Daily.
First, today's weather:
Low clouds and fog may break. High: 53 Low: 49.
Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today:
Marshall Medical Center and UC Davis Health have announced an affiliation for cancer services that allows Marshall patients access to the renowned UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center through the UC Davis Health Cancer Care Network. The affiliation will offer Marshall patients leading-edge cancer care. The collaborative cancer services will be based in Cameron Park and known as “Marshall Cancer Center, a UC Davis Health Affiliate.” (UC Davis Health)
There's one spot at 7th and J Streets, near the Golden 1 Center and across from 24 Hour Fitness, where you could receive a fat fine if your vehicle is parked in a white zone. RT trains can't pass if a vehicle is past the white line, so you may have been obstructing the light rail driver's path. California Judicial Council regarding traffic fines; section 22526 addresses "Blocking railroad or rail transit crossings." The total fine is uniformly set at $238. For obstructing the path of public transportation? I think that's a bargain. (ABC10)
The Railyards just north of downtown Sacramento is due for a $30 million makeover. The funds come from a state grant that was included in the last state budget at the request of Mayor Darrell Steinberg. Plans for the Railyards include thousands of homes, offices, a new Kaiser hospital, and retail and entertainment venues. A new $500 million courthouse is also under construction along with the AJ, a 345-unit housing project with 69 units of affordable housing and ground-floor retail. (ABC10)
If you're thinking of heading out to eat, check your restaurant's webpage before you jump in the car. Some are temporarily closing due to the COVID-19 surge. Beast and Bounty in midtown Sacramento says "we think it is best to postpone our anticipated reopening. As of right now we are hoping to reopen on Tuesday, January 11th but will continue to take things day by day." And as for Bacon and Butter, Tuesday night the restaurant made the decision to stall reopening until at least Friday, after some employees tested positive for the virus. At this point, there are no new rules from the state or county requiring restaurants to make changes due to the recent spike in cases, but some are taking their safety into their own hands. (KCRA3)
A pedestrian has died after a hit-and-run accident along Garden Highway in Sacramento. Sacramento police say the incident happened a little after 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday along the 1000 block of Garden Highway. The driver had taken off before officers got to the scene. (CBS Sacramento)
