Victoria Day long weekend in Ontario gets off to a cool, wet start

While the Victoria Day weekend is often seen as the unofficial start to summer, there won't be anything resembling that in Ontario this year.

Parts of Western Canada will be struggling with above-seasonal temperatures this weekend, while Ontario will be quite different. The province will be greeted by dreary skies to start and a round of cooler temperatures just in time for fireworks on the holiday Monday.

Saturday

Rainfall eases from west to east on Saturday, with some clearing conditions for southwestern Ontario late afternoon, including the GTA. It will eventually end for eastern Ontario overnight.

There is the chance to hear some rumbles of thunder in eastern Ontario with a bit of instability in the region.

This will turn out to be a solid slog of rain for much of southern and eastern Ontario, with gauges picking up 20-40 mm of precipitation throughout parts of the regions. The highest totals are likely in in cottage country.

Cooler temperatures will move into the province from west to east as the system gradually clears out of the region.

Sunday and Monday

In behind the low, there is the early chance for some lingering showers Sunday for eastern Ontario as the rest of the region stays dry. Temperatures rebound close to seasonal values for late May, even reaching above normal for extreme southwestern Ontario.

A much fresher feel across eastern Ontario as a cold, upper trough swings in, dipping temperatures below seasonal on the holiday Monday. A fresh, easterly wind keeps things cool in the GTA, but extreme southwestern Ontario still manages to eclipse the 20-degree mark.

Monday looks to be both the driest and chilliest day of the long weekend, with daytime temperatures locked firmly in the teens for just about everyone. Only folks in extreme southwestern Ontario will stand a chance to hit the 20-degree mark.
