A mix of steady rainfall and potential for light flooding could dampen the Lowcountry’s Memorial Day festivities on Friday and Saturday, but weather may clear by Sunday and Monday of the holiday weekend.

According to forecasts from the National Weather Service in Charleston, the developing coastal storm will bring heavy rain to the southern reaches of South Carolina from late Friday into Saturday. Southern counties can expect 1.5 to 3 inches of rain Friday and Saturday.

Minor coastal flooding should be expected in low-lying and areas with poor drainage. Overnight Friday expect the high tides, paired with the rain to contribute to the rising water levels in some areas..

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph will complicate driving conditions on bridges. Beachgoers should remain cautious in the water due to increased risk of rip currents and dangerous surf, with 4- to 6-foot waves. Saturday’s mix of high wind, rain and “unseasonably chilly” temperatures means the first day of the long weekend will be “unsuitable for outdoor activities,” according to the state’s forecast. Statewide, residents could see record-low highs ranging from 50 degrees in the Upstate to 70 near the coasts, much cooler than expected in late May.

Weather is expected to improve by Sunday and Monday, however. Isolated showers will remain on Sunday as the low pressure system moves away, according to the state forecast. By Monday, the only slight rain chances will be in the afternoon.

Sunday’s Lowcountry highs will hover in the 70s, and Monday’s are expected to be in the 80s.
