RIVERSIDE, CA — A winter storm is forecast to bring heavy rain and mountain snow to the region beginning on Monday.
Showers are expected to drop between half an inch and an inch of rain in Riverside County, according to the National Weather Service.
Meanwhile, mountain areas between 4,500 and 5,500 feet will see two to six inches of snow, though the heaviest snow is expected to hit elevations above 5,500 feet, including the San Jacinto mountains according to the NWS. Those areas are forecast to receive 12 to 18 inches of snow.
Riverside County mountains will be under a winter storm warning from 8 a.m. Monday to 4 a.m. Tuesday, with strong winds also forecast to blow through snow-impacted areas, making driving difficult.
"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the NWS said.
Temperatures will dip below normal and stay that way until around New Year's Day, forecasters said.
Lows overnight will be between 38 and 45 degrees in the valleys and 22 to 32 degrees in the mountains, according to the NWS.
Highs in the valley on Monday will be between 50 and 55 degrees, with lows between 34 and 41 degrees, forecasters said. The mountains will see highs between 38 and 47 degrees on Monday, with lows between 21 and 31 degrees.
Snow Valley Mountain Resort in Running Springs in the San Bernardino Mountains had received a half-foot of fresh snow Monday morning and 16 inches more were in the forecast. The resort is open, but chain restrictions are currently in place.
“The Snow Valley team is ready and excited to bring some holiday fun, joy and pleasure on the slopes to our neighbors, as we all do our best to deal with COVID-19. We have precautions in place and tested over the past six weeks we’ve been open” said the resort's Vice President & General Manager, Kevin Somes.
Snow Valley will be open Monday, until 4 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. On New Year’s Eve, the resort will close at 4 p.m. Thursday, and will reopen from 8:30 a.m to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
