Rain is on the way. Here's what we can expect in the Southern Tier

The Southern Tier is in store for several consecutive days of wet weather, but National Weather Service forecasters say there are no current flood warnings or watches in effect for the region and any flash flooding that occurs will likely be isolated.

The forecast for Binghamton and most of the Southern Tier predicts plenty of rain, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible across the region starting Friday afternoon and continuing through the weekend.

But the wet stuff should not cause huge problems.

The heaviest rainfall and chance of thunderstorms in the Binghamton area is expected to be on Saturday.

Will Southern Tier see flooding?

“We are not expecting anything widespread, as far as flooding goes,” said Mike Kistner, a Binghamton-based National Weather Service meteorologist.

Kistner said any issues that develop are expected to be "very localized and very isolated" and in areas prone to flash flooding due to steep terrain and other factors.

Kistner said the region's main stem rivers are not expected to be impacted because of their current low levels.

“That’s a good thing we have going for us right now. We have some wiggle room there," he said. "We have had relatively a very dry spring. And other than some unsettled conditions that we have had the last couple of weeks, most of the area is running in a deficit as far as rainfall goes."

State urges residents to be prepared for flash flooding

State officials issued cautions advising for the chance for localized flooding in New York City, Long Island, Mid-Hudson and Southern Tier regions. Upstate regions including the Capital Region, North Country, Mohawk Valley and Central New York are also at risk for excessive rainfall and isolated flash floods, officials said.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said state personal "are constantly monitoring forecasts" and she encouraged residents to "take responsible precautions" like being aware of local forecasts, signing up for emergency alerts, monitoring road closures and preparing a bag of supplies in the event a rapid evacuation is needed.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain more likely Saturday

National Weather Service modeling for the Southern Tier shows a greater chance for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday.

"The ingredients look better for those heavier showers and thunderstorms (on Saturday)," Kistner said. "And slow moving showers and thunderstorms as well. We do not have a lot of flow to push these storms along right now so any storm that develops is going to be moving really slow.”
