Raising Cane's makes plan for Glassboro site as chain grows South Jersey footprint

GLASSBORO — The chicken-centric Raising Cane’s restaurant chain is following through on its interest in a former pharmacy at the corner of North Delsea Drive and Donald Barger Boulevard here.

Raising Cane’s touched base in January with borough officials about the former Rite Aid pharmacy. The chain recently dropped in an application for a 3,321-square-foot restaurant, with the double drive-thru lanes now standard with fast-foot outlets.

The proposed restaurant would be less than half the size of the pharmacy, which sits on a 1.58-acre lot that last sold in 2020 for almost $2.4 million. It would open along a heavily traveled corridor already stacked with restaurants, including a newly rebuilt Burger King.

Raising Cane’s, based in Texas, has other projects under development in Deptford, Cherry Hill, Evesham, and Washington townships.

The borough Planning Board will decide on whether the proposal qualifies as a conditional use and whether the site plan design meets code.

The property, at the corner of Donald Barger Boulevard, is under consideration as a site for a Raising Cane's chicken restaurant. The idea was discussed at a work committee meeting of the Glassboro Zoning Board in January 2023. The business is asking for seven variances from regulations, mostly dealing with the number, placement, and size of signs. The design also needs the board to accept a percentage of impervious coverage greater than exists now. The pharmacy was built in 1995.

The public hearing was scheduled for Oct. 3 but has been postponed now until Nov. 8.
