Scottie Scheffler has taken the drama out of three of the PGA Tour’s season-long competitions.

All that’s left that is the FedEx Cup and the possibility of another $18 million for winning on Aug. 25-28 at the Tour Championship.

With this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., left on the regular-season schedule, the former University of Texas player and Masters champion has clinched the regular-season FedEx Cup title (and already has the PGA Tour record for earnings in one season at $13,176,910, topping Jordan Spieth’s mark of more than $12 million in 2015), the Aon Risk-Reward Challenge ($1 million) and the Comcast Business Tour Top-10 ($4 million).

The Aon Risk Reward Challenge takes the two best scores from every event in which a player competes (with a minimum of 40 rounds). The Comcast Tour Top-10 is a bonus pool for regular-season FedEx Cup points.

Should Scheffler go on to win the FedEx Cup, he would pull in more than $36 million.

The FedEx Cup playoffs begin next week at TPC Southwind near Memphis with the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The top-70 in points advance to the BMW Championship Aug. 18-21 at the Wilmington (Del.) Country Club and the top-30 after that week head to East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship.

Local knowledge

U.S. Presidents Cup captain Davis Love III of St. Simons Island, Ga., will have an assistant captain who knows all the bumps and bounces of the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, the site of the international match-play event Sept. 20-25.

Webb Simpson (right), with caddie Paul Tesori of St. Augustine, has been named an assistant captain for Davis Love III at the Presidents Cup in September.
Webb Simpson (right), with caddie Paul Tesori of St. Augustine, has been named an assistant captain for Davis Love III at the Presidents Cup in September.

Love has added Webb Simpson, a Quail Hollow member, and 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker to his staff that already included past winning Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples and 2023 Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson.

Simpson has a 5-3-2 record in three appearances in the Presidents Cup, all U.S. victories in 2011, 2013 and 2019. The seven-time PGA Tour winner won the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2018 Players Championship.

“I’m excited to see the Presidents Cup contested on my home course in a great sports town like Charlotte, and I know the fans are going to show up with tremendous support for the U.S. Team,” said Simpson in a statement.

“Webb is a fiery competitor and a player who has served as an incredible role model to so many of the young guys on Tour,” said Love in another statement. “To add someone with his experience to the team room, who is also a peer and one of the top players in the game, will be a great addition to the week at Quail Hollow. I know he’s excited to help lead the U.S. Team on his home course.”

Stricker was also the winning Presidents Cup captain in 2017 at Liberty National and went 14-10 in five Presidents Cups. He won 12 times on the PGA Tour and eight on PGA Tour Champions.

The top-six players on the U.S. points list and the top-eight on the International team list will earn automatic spots on the team following the BMW Championship. Love and International captain Trevor Immelman win fill out their 12-man teams with wild-card selections announced on Aug. 29.

Billy Horschel of Ponte Vedra is 11th on the U.S. points list and Cameron Smith of Ponte Vedra leads the international team.

Playoff goals

The PGA Tour numbers-crunchers have figured out what the players outside the top-125 on the FedEx Cup points list will need this week at the Wyndham Championship to qualify for the playoffs that start next week at the St. Jude Championship.

It's going to be a tall order for some First Coast and Golden Isles residents.

Doc Redman of Ponte Vedra Beach will have to finish 18th or better in this week's Wyndham Championship to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Doc Redman of Ponte Vedra Beach will have to finish 18th or better in this week's Wyndham Championship to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Doc Redman of Ponte Vedra Beach is 136th on the points list and needs to finish 18th or higher to catch or pass No. 125 Austin Smotherman.

Zach Johnson of St. Simons Island, Ga., at 142nd, needs a solo eighth place finish or better.

Jonathan Byrd of St. Simons is 146th and needs a top-six finish.

Harris English of St. Simons is 182nd, David Lingmerth of Ponte Vedra is 191st and Jared Wolfe of Nocatee is 193rd, and all three need to finish first or second to make the post-season.

Then there's Davis Love III. The 58-year-old is 225th in points and has to win the tournament to crack the top-125.
