Raleigh police detain armed suspect in UNC Rex hospital parking lot in Raleigh
Raleigh police arrested a suspect in a parking deck near UNC Rex Hospital Wednesday after receiving reports of a person with a firearm, a hospital spokesperson said.
The security office at UNC Rex Hospital on Lake Boone Trail received a report that a person with an unidentified weapon was involved in a domestic dispute in a parking deck next to the hospital, UNC Health spokesman Alan Wolf told The News & Observer.
Hospital entrances were shut down when security notified the hospital of the incident and contacted the Raleigh Police Department.
Police officers responded quickly, Wolf said, and took a suspect into custody.
The firearm was not functional or serviceable, according to UNC Protective Services.
A nearby school, Follow the Child Montessori School, initiated a lockdown after receiving a report at 2:29 p.m. of a person with a gun on the hospital property, according to an email sent to parents obtained by The News & Observer.
By 2:40 p.m, the school was notified that the suspect was arrested,
The school on Harden Road is located across from the hospital.
The N&O has reached out to the police department to learn more about the incident.
The incident comes after the day after a mass shooting at a school in Ulvade, Texas, where 19 students and two adults were killed.
