Community gathers in Uptown to rally for justice for Shanquella Robinson

Community leaders and family members of Shanquella Robinson gathered in Uptown Saturday afternoon to call for justice in her death.

The Million Youth March of Charlotte and Salisbury organized the event. It was held at Little Rock AME Zion Church in Uptown.

Several elected leaders spoke at the rally, including Mayor pro tem Braxton Winston.

“I’m going to be honest, this is tough. This is hard ... I don’t have much to bring ... how many words of comfort can you bring in a situation like this?,” said Winston.

One of the faces in attendance was Saundra Adams, along with her grandson, Chancellor. As a baby, Chancellor survived a murder attempt orchestrated by his father, former NFL player Rae Carruth, that killed his mother, Cherica.

Adams said their family has experienced loss and they wanted the Robinson family to know that they have a shoulder to lean on.

Channel 9′s Erica Bryant spoke at the event. She told the crowd that Channel 9 would not stop covering this case until they get answers.

“I promise you that myself, my colleagues at Channel 9 will work tirelessly to try and find answers about what happened,” said Bryant.

It’s been more than one month since Robinson was killed while vacationing with friends in Mexico. Investigators there said an arrest warrant has been issued in the case, but police have made no arrests.

On Wednesday, Channel 9 spoke with Robinson’s sister. She said justice for Robinson would mean making sure whoever is responsible for her death serves time.

“Everybody being arrested and doing time in Mexico. Everybody being extradited over there and doing their time there. That would be justice for us as of now,” said Quilla Long.

At the end of the rally, Shanquella’s father, Bernard Robinson, thanked everyone who came out. He said he believes that justice for his daughter is not too far away.

“Oh, it encourage me a big ‘ole lot, like I told you God is gonna answer my prayer. When I stood over my daughter, I told her I ask God, I prayed, show me what happened to her, show me cause I know it wasn’t no alcohol poisoning,” said Robinson.
