Ram Electric Pickup Is Coming Soon
Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley announced that Ram will add an electric pickup to its lineup.
Details on its release were not given, only that it'll arrive soon.
Pricing should start near $70,000.
Yes, Ram is versatile. The brand just released a 702-hp Hellcat supercharged V-8–powered 1500 TRX pickup that's EPA estimated at a combined 12 mpg—we achieved 9 mpg in our test—but it plans to add an electric pickup to its lineup as well. During a third-quarter earnings call, Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley said to "stay tuned for a little while," as reported by the Detroit Free Press.
FCA doesn't have a fully electric vehicle in its U.S. lineup yet, although it's planning electric versions of the Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio sports cars as well as the new MC20 supercar, and a plug-in-hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe will arrive in dealerships early next year. We're not sure when the Ram EV, which should be based on the 1500 pickup, will arrive. A Ram spokesperson declined to provide any additional details.
Automakers including Ford and more recently GMC with its 1000-hp Hummer EV pickup, have been working on electric pickups to compete with newcomers such as Bollinger, Rivian, and Lordstown, and they seem to be ahead of Ram, at least for now. Tesla also has an electric pickup, the Cybertruck, on the way, which is claimed to be able to tow up to 14,000 pounds and drive more than 500 miles on a single charge.
Expect the Ram EV to start close to $70,000 when it arrives sometime in the next few years.
