Oct. 10—HERMITAGE — Chris Roth rambled for 247 yards rushing and a trio of touchdowns, staking Sharpsville High's football team to a 34-6 Region 1 win over Kennedy Catholic.

During Saturday's matinee at Butala Stadium the Blue Devils devoured KC's depleted defense for 378 rushing yards as Ian Smith scored from 7 yards out and contributed 85 yards rushing and Zack Tedrow tallied on a 44-yard scoring sprint.

Coach Paul Piccirilli's Blue Devils (2-2, 4-3) bounced back in a big way from a disappointing defeat at home to Wilmington.

Roth rambled for 6-yard TD runs in both the 1st and 2nd stanzas as Sharpsville secured a 14-0 margin at intermission, then his 2-yarder in the 3rd period extended the edge to 20-0.

Kennedy Catholic — coming off the program's 1st win since 2012 — shaved Sharpsville's lead to 20-6 with 2:34 remaining in the 3rd quarter. Frosh QB Rayvion Wilbon-Venable collaborated with Simeir Wade on a 17-yard scoring strike, with Wade outleaping a pair of Blue Devils' defenders in the end zone.

However on the play Wilbon-Venable sustained a game-ending injury to his right knee and was carted from the field. He connected on 7 of 16 pass attempts for 160 yards, including a trio to Wade for gains of 58, 28 and 17 yards.

The Golden Eagles (1-4, 1-5) entered the contest with only 15 players in uniform. Earlier in the game they lost another standout, Blaze Campbell, to a left-ankle injury.

The Blue Devils' defense registered a handful of quarterback sacks, including 3 by Braden Scarvel. Kennedy Catholic could not compile a running game as the Golden Eagles ended with minus-8 yards on 30 snaps. Overall, KC concluded with 164 yards.

On Senior Recognition Day, Kennedy Catholic's Kole Tarary took back a 2nd-stanza interception of a Caullin Summers' pass 86 yards to Sharpsville's 7-yard line; however a Sharpsville sack and trio of penalties — 2 for holding — KO'd KC's drive, which ultimately backtracked to the 41-yard line and ended with a punt.

KC Coach John Reay's club was whistled for a dozen penalties for 118 lost yards.

The game's latter stages deteriorated, with 3 unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and a personal foul called during the last 7 minutes.

Notes: Sharpsville placekicker Liam Campbell contributed 4 PATs and attempted a 1st-half concluding 47-yard field goal that faded wide right. ... Offensively, Sharpsville secured 449 total yards.
