Randallstown Nail Salon Closed After Child Neglect Call: Police
RANDALLSTOWN, MD — A nail salon was shut down in Randallstown this week after police were called to handle a case of reported child neglect. Two children were inside a parked car with no supervision, according to police, who said the vehicle was turned off.
A 3-month-old boy and a 3-year-old girl were inside the vehicle when officers arrived in the 3600 block of Offutt Road, police said. Officers were called there at 12:19 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13.
The officer tried to find the parent or vehicle owner so he broke the driver's side window with his baton, police said. Medics were called to check the children, and a supervisor came to knock on doors during a second round of searching for someone responsible.
Police said the shades were drawn at a nail salon, where the supervisor saw people inside but nobody was answering; after multiple attempts to get a response, officials said an employee answered the door.
A woman responded that she was the parent of the two children in the vehicle, after the officer provided the make and model.
Keontae Moodie, 21, of the 1100 block of Somerset Street in Baltimore, was issued two citations for leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, which is a misdemeanor.
Leaving children under age 8 unattended in a car is against the law in Maryland if the caregiver is out of the sight of the child, unless a reliable caregiver at least 13 years old remains with the child.
Police said the nail salon was ordered to close and complied.
Nail salons are not allowed to be open, based on the governor's orders, to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.
