Random act of kindness: How a Northwest Florida window cleaning company brightened foster kids' day

FORT WALTON BEACH — The lives of residents at Children in Crisis’ Children’s Neighborhood got a little brighter Thursday, thanks to the efforts of a local business.

Fish Window Cleaning of Northwest Florida brought its crew out to thoroughly wash windows in the neighborhood’s clubhouse and one of its residential foster homes for free as part of National Random Acts of Kindness Day.

Random Acts of Kindness Day is Feb. 17, and is part of Random Acts of Kindness Week, which runs Feb. 13-19. The idea is to perform a good deed, gesture, service or other act that celebrates kindness.

“We really wanted to focus on an organization that’s giving back to their community,” said Danica LaFaire, owner of Fish Window Cleaning, a residential and commercial service that operates from Inlet Beach west to Pensacola. “We brought our whole team today. Everyone really cares about being able to give back and just share with the community.”

The Fish crew hand-squeegeed the inside of the windows, removed and cleaned the screens and vacuumed dirt from the sills before using a water-powered brush to clean the outside of the windows and frames.

“This is a wonderful thing,” said Ken Hair, president and CEO of Children in Crisis Inc. “Fish came to us and said, ‘We’d like to do a Random Act of Kindness,’ and I said, ‘We need that.’

“It’s a tough business when you’re a nonprofit out there and you’re trying to provide homes to children and all that goes along with that,” Hair said. “So we’re just very delighted that they stepped up and helped us.”

Incorporated in 2003, Children in Crisis provides a home for foster children removed from unsafe environments in Northwest Florida. The CIC’s Children’s Neighborhood encompasses five foster-family homes, a clubhouse and an emergency shelter, and a teen transition home.

The facility serves about 100 foster children per year and recently provided a home for the organization’s 1,000th child.

LaFaire hopes her team’s random act will inspire others to acts of kindness and take a closer look at nonprofit organizations doing good in the community.

“We really wanted to raise awareness and just inspire others to check out Children in Crisis on their website, maybe donate or look at sponsorship opportunities,” LaFaire said. “There are so many great nonprofits in this area.”
