Randy Meier announces candidacy for Iowa House District 69

Dec. 12—CLINTON — Randy Meier, director of the Clinton County Sheriff's Seniors vs. Crime unit, announced on Tuesday his candidacy as a Democrat for Iowa House District 69, challenging Republican incumbent Tom Determann.
"My whole life has been about service to my country or community, from joining the military when I was 17, to the work I do now for the Sheriff's Office right here in Clinton County," Meier said in a news release. "I view the Iowa House as another opportunity for me to serve the community, advance the public interest, and contribute to the common good of all Iowans, not just some."
He is a former detective with the Clinton Police Department, and he and his wife live in Clinton where they raised two daughters.
House District 69 represents eastern Clinton County. Determann, a former Clinton County supervisor, is in his first term.
Meier says he wants to spearhead "cost reduction initiatives for Iowans" as well as education and public safety reforms, all while working with Republicans.
"Iowans are frustrated with the divisive politics of today and so am I," he said. "I'll work with people on both sides of the aisle and always put the people of Clinton County first."
Regarding public safety, he's committed to working closely with law enforcement agencies, community leaders and residents, he said. This includes supporting initiatives to address root causes of crime and investing in community-based programs.
On education, Meier will advocate for increased public school funding and listen to teachers, the news release said. His two daughters grew up attending Clinton public schools, and he wants to ensure that every opportunity that was available to them, is available to all kids.
On the environment, he will be a "fierce advocate" to protect Iowa's water and natural resources, the news release said.
