Rangers Fans Sing Anthem After UEFA Rejects Clubs' Request to Play It

Supporters of the Scottish soccer club Rangers sang God Save the King ahead of their Champions League tie against Napoli on September 14, after UEFA had rejected British clubs’ requests for the anthem to be played before the midweek games.

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea, Manchester City and Rangers had submitted the request to UEFA, but it was declined.

In a statement to Sky Sports News, the governing body said: “There will be no anthems played – this also includes the UEFA Champions League anthem – on the basis of maintaining a consistent pre-match ceremony with a subdued atmosphere and without any celebratory activities across all UK venues to show respect as we did last Thursday.”

Video shows Rangers supporters singing the anthem at Ibrox stadium (with some saying “queen” and others “king”), as well as a display in tribute to the late monarch.
