New rankings: Report names best public high schools in the Galesburg area

Only one of the high schools in the Galesburg area was ranked in the top 200 of U.S. News & World Report's top public high schools in Illinois.

The media company, known for its consumer advice, analysis and rankings, released its 2023 high school rankings Aug. 28.

Nearly 18,000 public high schools across the U.S. were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college.

Here's a look at how schools in the Galesburg area fared.

Knoxville Senior High School

The top-rated school in the Galesburg area is Knoxville Senior High School. The school received an overall grade of 65.19 out of 100, which is good to be ranked 196th in the state. The school has a graduation rate of 85% and 30% of students have taken at least one Advanced Placement exam.

Galesburg High School

The next highest rated school in the Galesburg area is Galesburg High School after receiving a score of 52.76 out 100. The school is ranked as the 257th best public high school in Illinois. The report said the high school's graduation rate is at 80% and only 17% of students have taken at least one Advanced Placement exam.

Williamsfield High School

Ranked as the 354th best in the state, Williamsfield High School is the third best school in the Galesburg area, according to the report. The school had an overall score of 35.96 despite having a 90% graduation rate. The school does not offer Advanced Placement testing.

ROWVA High School

Just cracking the top 400 (398) in the state, ROWVA High School in Onedia, Illinois had an overall score of 29.28, according to the report. The school has students from grades 7 through 12. The school's graduation rate is 91% and 22% of students have taken at least one Advanced Placement exam.

Abingdon-Avon High School

The lowest rated school in the Galesburg area was Abingdon-Avon High School in Abingdon, Illinois. The school had an overall score below 25 and ranks between 437-664 in the state. The school has a graduation rate of 84% and does not offer Advanced Placement testing.
