MURRAY RICHMAN: I received the call this morning. Earl Simmons was in hospital at White Plains Hospital, and that he had a heart attack. And I'm not sure how it was induced, and that he was on life support. I've spoken to the family, and the family and I are quite close with each other.

I'm concerned about his well-being and mindful of his significance. I've known Earl for over 25 years, and I believe that his music is, well, quite poignant, very important. He's truly a poet of our time.

It's easy to just forget about rap and throw it away, but there's some significance to it. And if you bother paying attention, my generation, as well as others, they'd recognize the importance of this, well, phenomenon. You can't just blow it off.

It's really significant, and he is a person who represents an age and is symptomatic of what the problems of the age is. I'm saddened of his health. I'm concerned about it.
