Chicago rapper Vic Mensa was arrested at Washington Dulles International Airport after he was accused of having illegal drugs in his possession, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Mensa, born Victor Kwesi Mensah, arrived at Dulles on a flight from Ghana around 7 a.m. on Jan. 15, a news release from the agency said. During a bag examination, agents said they found several types of illegal drugs, including 41 grams of liquid LSD, about 124 grams of psilocybin capsules, 178 grams of psilocybin gummies and 6 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.

Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic chemical that naturally occurs in psychedelic mushrooms, according to LiveScience. LSD and psilocybin products are both Schedule 1 substances under federal law, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Mensa was charged with felony narcotics possession and was taken into custody by police at the airport, the release said.

Mensa, 28, had traveled to Ghana with collaborator Chance the Rapper and several other Chicago-based artists to help promote tourism in Africa, Complex reported. The two rappers shared a picture of themselves with Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Jan. 14.

Some states have decriminalized certain quantities of Schedule 1 substances — for example, in 2020, Oregon became the first state to approve the supervised use of psilocybin for mental health treatment, and in 18 states and the District of Columbia, marijuana is approved for recreational use. But narcotics possession is still illegal under federal law, meaning that travelers could be penalized for bringing those drugs with them, CBP said in the release.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
