RARE AIR: BHS jumper barely short of record, team shines at Claremore

Jack Wahl took flight Friday and came up just a brush of becoming Bartlesville’s FLOAT — Flying Leader Of All Time.

The 6-foot-4 senior with the powerful leg thrust and dynamic grace gliding through the frozen sky cleared the high jump bar at a career-high 6-foot-8 to win the championship at last weekend’s Claremore meet.

Then, Wahl set his sights of surpassing A.J. Parker (Class of 2016) for the school record (6-10). He set the bar at 6-10.25 — and just barely missed on completely a clean jump, Bruin head coach David Ayres said.

Wahl is the defending Class 6A state champ in the event.

He wasn’t the only Bartlesville that made a powerful record effort at Claremore.

Junior Campbell Barta perforated the air like a lightning bolt to run the girls’ 100m in 12-seconds flat, good for third place.

She shattered her previous personal best (:12.35), and also threatened the school record time of :11.96.

In addition to Wahl’s sky samba in the boys’ high jump, Bartlesville waltzed away with two other championships — in the girls’ 4x800m relay and the girls’ 1600m run.

In the later, Gentry Turner blazed past the rest of the field to win in 5:13.3 —  by a margin of nearly 16 seconds.

The relay team consisted of Turner, Lauren Shoesmith, Reese Savage and Katherine Manley. It burst through the course in 10:06.3 to win by almost 25 seconds.

Bartlesville — which is coached by David Ayres — sparkled in other events.

Barta and Kaydance Barnett nailed down second (17-11) and fourth (17-3), respectively, in the girls long jump.

Barnett also turned in an impressive jump of 4-foot-10 in her first-ever girls’ high jump competition.

For the Bruins, Kade Bostwick soared in the boys’ pole vault to a personal best 14-feet-6-inches to finish second.

Next up, Bartlesville competes this weekend in a meet at the University of Oklahoma.
