Rare Beauty's Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer has been making waves on social media, and after selling out with its first launch, it's finally back in stock — but probably not for long.

The lightweight serum-foundation hybrid claims to blur and protect the skin while providing light-medium coverage that is long-wearing and hydrating.

But is it worth the $38 price tag? I put it to the test to find out.

The details

As described on the Rare Beauty website, this is no-makeup makeup in a bottle. Noted as being super comfortable and breathable, the product's weightless formula is designed to blend in like a moisturizer and provide an overall smooth, hydrated, and radiant finish. It also works to blur the skin by minimizing the look of fine lines and pores, while claiming to be long-wearing.

So what’s in it? The Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer is composed of the brand’s signature botanical blend of lotus, gardenia and white water lily. All of these ingredients combined help to soothe and nourish the skin, giving you a “your skin but better” look. It also features vitamin E, ensuring your skin is protected from free radicals.

It’s also worth noting that this product is paraben-free, vegan, cruelty-free, dermatologist-tested, non-comedogenic, and suitable for sensitive skin. It also comes in 24 flexible shades covering a wide range of skin tones.

First impressions

After watching endless TikTok creators unbox the brand’s PR package, I knew I had to get my hands on this launch to see what the hype was all about.

In order to find my perfect shade, I used the Sephora Shade Finder, which prompted me to colour match my current foundation to Rare Beauty’s tinted moisturizer lineup. As a result, my perfect shade is 22W (light-medium with warm golden undertones).

I personally loved the packaging of the Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer. Featuring a mess-free, easy-to-use squeeze bottle, it has a unique design as well as a small nozzle that allows you to control the amount of product you want to use.

Before application, I prepped my skin as always with the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40. The Rare Beauty website recommends using your hands to apply the product, but I opted to squeeze a few drops onto my favourite damp beauty sponge to help blend it onto my face.

Starting off sparingly, I dotted the product around my face and used my beauty sponge to blend it in. As I continued to work the product into my skin, I started noticing how comfortable and lightweight it felt. It felt super hydrating and gave my skin an overall soft-focus effect. Although the coverage is light, it instantly helped to even out my skin tone and cover up most of my active spots.

After applying one layer, I was thoroughly impressed. It provided ample coverage without feeling too heavy or cakey, and it didn’t cling to any of the dry spots I had on my face. It felt just like my skin.

I then realized I wanted additional coverage under my eyes as well as on top of my active red spots. As a result, I squeezed out a few more tiny drops onto my beauty sponge and applied them directly to my problem areas, to further conceal. I love how easy it is to build up the coverage with this product.

After feeling content with the base coverage, I followed up with the rest of my makeup routine to see how well the tinted moisturizer would hold up. I'm happy to report that the product didn’t lift, and sat well beneath my go-to cream and powder products I placed overtop.

It also lived up to its long-wearing claims. It wore incredibly well during the day and stayed put for several hours. Plus, my skin didn’t look or feel oily by the end of the night.

What others are saying

People online are loving the latest Rare Beauty launch. The glowing reviews from Sephora shoppers are praising the product for its weightless feel, and ability to provide good coverage and instant hydration. Users are also in agreement that the product looks and feels just like your skin when applied.

For example, one Sephora user notes how lightweight and "clean" it felt, as well as how nicely it settled into her skin.

Another user loved how it, "provided good coverage without being heavy."

While some shoppers have fallen for the latest Rare Beauty launch, others weren't as impressed, noting that they can "get the same effect from a cheaper tinted moisturizer as I can with this."

Verdict

After trying, wearing, and loving the product, I can confidently say that this is one of my new favourite makeup products. The liquid formula glides onto your face and melts in so seamlessly, becoming one with your skin.

Not only is it the perfect lightweight tinted moisturizer, but it also features Vitamin E, offering my skin the protection against free radicals it needs. As a result, this product gives my skin the best of both worlds.

The amount of coverage, protection, and hydration it provides is a win-win-win. So is the Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer worth it? My skin votes yes, but you'll have to try it for yourself to decide whether the $38 price tag is worth it.
