A rare Sports Equinox will take place on Thursday, which is good news for fans

The sports worlds will be aligned Thursday.

Because the Dodgers won Game 3 of the National League Championship Series on Tuesday, there will be a Game 5 on Thursday.

A trio of NBA games and NHL games are planned for that day. And there’s also the Thursday night NFL game between the Browns and Broncos.

Add it up, and that means it’ll be a Sports Equinox as the traditional big four sports leagues will all be in action.

This is good news for sports fans, who are guaranteed to have something to watch Thursday. But it could make for some hard choices (this might be a good time to see if your TV has picture-in-picture mode).

But, wait, there’s more.

The U.S. women’s national team plays South Korea at Children’s Mercy Park on Thursday, the PGA’s ZOZO Championship starts that day and four college football games are scheduled, which makes this a special Sports Equinox.

How rare is this sports occurrence? Former Philadelphia Daily News scoreboard editor Bob Vetrone Jr. tweeted that this will be just the 25th time it’s happened. And three took place a year ago when sports leagues scrambled their schedules because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vetrone noted we get two other chances at a Sports Equinox this month.

Sunday: This is contingent on a Game 7 of the NLCS. There would be the usual Sunday NFL games, along with six NBA games and four NHL contests. Added bonus: there are two Major League Soccer games scheduled along with the end of the ZOZO Championship.

Oct. 31: This is contingent on a fifth game of the World Series. In addition to Sunday NFL games, there are five NBA contests scheduled and five NHL games are on the docket. Plus there would be four MLS games, two NWSL games and the PGA’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship, making it a Sports Equinox Max day.
