Sir Alex Ferguson, who, along with Sir Bobby Charlton, has also been honoured by the university, watched on at Old Trafford as the 23-year-old became the youngest person ever to receive an honorary degree from the university.
"To be here in the presence of a great such as Sir Alex and those who played a huge role in my journey to where I am today is very special. I appreciate you all making the time for me today," Rashford said.
In 2020 Rashford led a campaign to end child food poverty and successfully lobbied the British government to continue to provide free school meals.
Rashford said he hoped that the attention around the honorary degree would help further the cause as he continues to advocate against child poverty.
Rashford was also awarded an MBE for services to vulnerable children during the COVID-19 pandemic following the campaign.
It was announced in July 2020 that Rashford would receive the honorary degree but the official in-person ceremony and celebration were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
