Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and her son, Adam, will host a reading of her picture book, "Mama in Congress," on Saturday morning at Detroit bookstore Next Chapter Books.

The U.S. Representative for Detroit's 12th District published "Mama in Congress: Rashida Tlaib's Journey to Washington" in 2022 to tell the story of her journey from local community activist to being a national trailblazer for Muslim women.

Newly opened on Detroit's eastside, Next Chapter Books, served the community as a pop-up bookstore for months before finally securing its brick-and-mortar location at 16555 E. Warren Ave. in September.

Tlaib serves as the only Palestinian American in Congress and recently claimed headlines for her relentless push for a call for ceasefire in Gaza.

The oldest of 13 siblings, Tlaib was born in Detroit's southwest neighborhood and was the first in her family to graduate high school. She went on to earn degrees at Wayne State University and Western Michigan University and worked for the nonprofit Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, before being the first Muslim elected to the Michigan legislature in 2008.

New Center Book with Storytime with Rashida and Adam runs from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
