Raskin suggests Clarence Thomas should recuse himself from Trump 14th Amendment decision

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) suggested Sunday that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas should recuse himself from a future ruling on whether former President Trump can be disqualified from the 2024 ballot under the 14th Amendment.

Raskin said he thinks “anybody looking at this in any kind of dispassionate, reasonable way would say if your wife was involved in the big lie and claiming that Donald Trump actually won the presidential election and [had] been agitating for that and participating in the events leading up to Jan. 6, that you shouldn’t be participating.”

“He should recuse himself,” Raskin added in response to a direct question from CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union.”

Maine’s secretary of state this week decided to boot Trump from the state’s ballot, claiming he was ineligible under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

Maine is the second state to reach such a conclusion.

Colorado’s Supreme Court earlier in December issued a ruling barring Trump from the state’s ballot.

Both decisions are expected to be challenged by Trump and seem likely to eventually end up being decided by the Supreme Court.

Challenges to Trump under the 14th Amendment have also been made in several other states that have decided to keep him on the ballot.

Raskin argued that Trump did disqualify himself from the ballot and said if the Supreme Court overturns the rulings in Maine and Colorado, the justices will be “falling for the argument that this is undemocratic.”

“Donald Trump is in that tiny, tiny number of people who’ve essentially disqualified themselves,” Raskin added.
